Review of Hotel Kochi Caprice, Ernakulam, Kerela

0

While choosing a hotel to stay in Ernakulam, I had to search quite a bit because I had a family (3 kids, my wife, and me). There are not many staying options available for a mid-sized budget if you are looking for a family room. Staying in two separate rooms was out of question because it surely destroys the idea of a family vacation.

After reading a lot of reviews on various booking sites, I decided to stay in Hotel Kochi Caprice. The reviews particularly pointed out that the hotel was clean and rooms were neat. As it happened, it was the only hotel that offered a well-maintained family room that has 4 beds.

I stayed in Hotel Kochi Caprice from March 23 to March 28, 2017. The hotel is not very big but very clean yes. Here are some pointers that may help people who would like to stay there:

  1. Hotel is very clean–rooms are neat and house-keeping is good.
  2. TV, refrigerator, and wi-fi work well.
  3. There is a cupboard, shoe-rack and a table and chair.
  4. Breakfast is offered in the restaurant just adjascent to the reception, which is small and presently has only 5 tables, which means it can serve only 20 people at a time. This is often a cause of trouble and delay.
  5. Lunch and dinner are served in the room. Service is slow and not too many options are available. However, because you will be touring the city, you may not find it too big a criterion.
  6. There is no food joint or outlet nearby. So, you will need to plan your eating timing accordingly.
  7. Hot water is usually available all the time but sometime due to over-usage, you will have to do without it.
  8. They have queen-size beds and therefore you can have a child sleeping with you if you booked a regular room. They do provide extra mattress for around 500 INR per day.
  9. Lighting in the room and cooling (through split AC) is good.
  10. They have well-maintained lift that can accommodate almost 5 people at a time. Staff is good and helpful. However, their cabs are costly. Local mobile-based taxis are a good option.

Overall, a decent hotel with beautiful rooms. I would recommend this hotel to anyone with that kind of mid-size budget.

Picking up a head-gear for festivals

A great cap saves you from the sun. It also ensures showing the attitude, mood and the fashion sense of an individual. In some cultures, a hat is considered a mark of respect, obligation, or even status. Formal as well as casual reasons drive the choice and purchase of hats. Whatever may be your choice, there’s always a hat for you in the market that will right kind of signal.

However, when it comes to picking up hats for summer festivals, the choice becomes a bit tricky because you have to take care of the sun as well as the fashion sense so that you can gel well with the festival mood. But a bit of research and shopping around will help you greatly in picking up the right kind of hat for you and your friends too.

The color and size

The color of a hat is crucial because it may enhance or destroy the appeal of your dress. Getting ready for a festival definitely calls for a well-chosen dress. Even casual apparel will need some kind of consideration when it comes to going to the festivals.

This consideration increases when you are going in a group of two or more. Depending upon the chemistry that you together enjoy, clothing and hats will be picked. Don’t be worried whether you will get matching caps or not. The market is full of options—you just need to shop around a bit and be on the lookout for the perfect match.

This is a where a great combo pack of the Blondie & Brownie caps offered by Dennis Strooband Merchandise are a great pick. In their unique way, they show the world that you two have come together and how much your friendship means to each other. These snapbacks are a perfect way to celebrate your friendship and let the world know that you are going to stick together.

Material of the snapbacks

What is important when you pick any snapback is the material—usually, the best quality hats are made of cotton. You can check the quality of these hats if they feel sturdy and have a plastic buckle at the back to adjust the size. Snapbacks and considered ideal for summers.

The final decision

The final decision of buying any hat for a great summer season depends upon these factors:

  1. Material quality of the hat
  2. Comfort level with the desired size
  3. Color and designing on the forehead of the cap

While picking any hat from the market, just make sure that you try it first so that you can be sure that it fits your head right. Also, if you like to do some fun together as friends, you can pick hats that look alike or have some kind of message that shows your spirit. STRBND Merchandise has these duo packs of Blondie & Brownie caps which have these words engraved on them, so that you can have the fun.

I recommend trying these snapbacks if you are looking to have a great summer festival season this year.

Now real estate crowdfunding—are you game!

Well, real estate is truly the estate that everybody wants to build. But not everybody gets the chance to build their dream homes. I have seen a lot of friends of mine taking loans to fund their properties and then spend 20-30 years in loan repayment. However, the returns are often low and lot of projects don’t get completed due to various issues by real estate developers.

But what if I were to tell you that Dangoestate.com is a real estate crowdfunding marketplace that has better options and offers to both investors and borrowers who are looking for good returns from the real estate market. Well, it sounds too good to be true but there is no shortage of realistic winners in the world.

As clear from the introduction of Dangoestate, it is a

…Peer-to-Real-Estate investing marketplace that matches accredited and institutional investors seeking high-yield, short-term, asset-collateralized investments to borrowers seeking more timely and consistent sources of funding for rehabbing properties around the world.

What really this marketplace brings to you is the technology and data-driven processes that will allow the borrowers to have a go at the high-yielding projects that would give them healthy returns if they decide to invest in real estate.

The process is really easy as you can invest through bitcoin and also have the investment done by an already existing Dangoestate investor. Once you decide and finalize your investment in a particular project or property, you can start earning over your investment on a daily basis. The reports will be generated real-time so that you can monitor the development of your investment.

Crowdfunding in real estate is not an easy process to carry out but it seems Dangoestate has provided meticulous customer services to its clients and that’s is why it has survived the otherwise volatile fate of internet startups.

Cheap and best laptops in India

0
0

There was a time around 2005 when I used to buy a new laptop every year. For three consecutive years, I did it—my first and only choice was Dell. It was not a cheap option but the best (at least at that time). Why? Well, because they offered on-site guarantee and it was a great experience to not to visit a store and get the required service at your own home.

What their customer service did to me resulted in me being their brand ambassador for many of my friends and acquaintances in the town. I would imagine that I would have recommended 20-odd people to buy Dell laptops during those times.

However, with changing time, popularity of their brand, and of course irregularities in customers’ demands, the customer services of Dell were hit—so were their material and quality of computers. This is where I started exploring other brands like Lenovo and even Acer.

I stopped recommending Dell laptops to my friends or anybody who asked me. My advice was to shop around. Ecommerce model picked up in India and sites like Amazon, FlipKart, and even Snapdeal offered a great insight about various laptop models. Then there came review sites who provided a thorough insight about the hardware, software and even the slightest of variations owing to the brands or the models. This is of course very helpful for a customer.

Customers started searching on Google for articles like 10 Best Laptops Under Rs 20,000 in India (2017) | Review Station so that they could get the list of laptops that would fall in the particular budget limit.

It became really easy for customers to buy laptops from local dealers or even online by reading these kind of articles, and educating themselves for better deals. There is no point in buying a laptop if you don’t understand what exactly you are buying!

Visiting Fort Kochi, Cochin, Kerela

0
0

Among all the South Indian states, I hadn’t visited Kerela thus far. Somehow, I never got the chance or plan working to visit this coastal part of India. Finally, Kochi became the destination for our family excursion in March. It was very hot (humid too) there as compared to the last days of the winter in Punjab.

Fort Koch Beach

We stayed in Kochi Caprice hotel for 4 days in total. The very first day, we decided to visit Fort Kochi beach because I wanted my niece and nephew to glimpse the majesty of the ocean. Living in Punjab, you covet for the chance to set your foot on the beach. This was their time!

We paid 250 INR for a 3-wheeler who clocked 15.1 Km from the hotel to the beach. Ideally, it should be around 150 INR but the 3-wheeler driver didn’t acknowledge his meter readings. I did not argue much because I had agreed to pay that amount at the beginning.

Fort Kochi is basically a jetty along the seashore where you can stroll and enjoy the beauty of the Arabian Sea. There are 3 points alongside the jetty where you can actually go and touch the water–very small beach-type places but they are good enough to have some fun. The water here is not considered ideal for swimming, so be warned to stay out of trouble.

Fort Koch Beach

Contrary to our belief that coconuts will be cheaper as compared to Punjab, we got the shock of our Kerela tour when we asked for the price–they sell it for 40 INR while in Punjab we get it for 45-50 INR. In Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and even in Tamil Nadu, I have had a different experience of enjoying coconuts at almost 20 INR. Anyway, we decided not to drink!

Fort Koch Beach

Fort Kochi beach is full of seashells and conchs, and this provided great joy to the kids–they collected a lot of them and thought of carried them back. I would merely playing with the seashells made their day.

Fort Koch Beach

Usually, jetty is kept very clean as there are repeated signs of ‘Do not Litter’ in Malyalam and even Hindi (funny spellings used though). There are many popsicle and ice-cream vendors, and some eateries available too. There is a bathroom available just 2-minute walk from the beach. So, overall, it makes a good spot for family outings and time-spending with your friends.

Chinese nets at Fort Kochi

Brahminy Kite at Fort KochiThe famous Chinese nets (or Portuguese as suggested by the latest research) can be sighted and touched here on Fort Kochi beach. They are huge wooden structures and remind you of days of the pirates. You would also be able to spot the Brahminy Kite hovering over the water and settling on the gigantic wooden poles of these nets.

There is a museum at the back-side or the side-alley of the beach which I didn’t because we were very tired. However, I did visit St. Francis Church where the tomb of Vasco da Gama was originally built–it is said that his remains were later moved to Lisbon. This area was the part of Fort Emmanuel, and apart from a gun that is visible from the jetty, there is hardly any other construction that you can see from this fort. Fort Kochi is the name but there is no fort as such.

Fort Koch Beach

We ate our lunch at Marina Sea-face hotel–it became our favorite spot because children could spot a lot of dolphins while enjoying the lunch. Food is tasty here the price is not very high. So, I would recommend eating here if you are visiting Fort Kochi beach.

On our way back, we took a bus, and it costed us total 70 INR to reach the hotel.

If you can manage the local transport, it is way cheaper, and provide you more options to explore the city.

Buying an external hard disk nowadays

0
0

It was in 2013 when I bought my first external hard disk. At that time, a 500 GB hard disk was more than enough to save all types of data—whether you have images, videos or text files, this storage would suffice. But times have changed. The file size of videos, images have increased so much given the consumption on social media also that user need bigger size of hard disks. This need brought 1 TB hard disk in the market but they needed power and could not be used simply by plugging them in the system through a USB drive. However, later on that functionality was brought on too.

The decision of buying a hard disk is not easy. The selection of company depends upon number of factors. One of the most crucial among them would be the replacement policy. I remember, after using my hard disk for some time, it got some errors and became dysfunctional. I had a 3-year guarantee for the same hard disk. I called up the company and they said that I will need to visit one of their service centers and submit the hard disk and then after a week I will get a new one. I was living in Gurgaon and they asked me to visit Nehru Place in Delhi. I did the same. After a week, they gave me recertified hard disk. Till now, I have not faced any problem in that one. I was not delighted that they didn’t give me a new one but because it didn’t cause any further problem, I managed with it. The brand of my hard disk is Seagate.

However, now that the space offered in hard disk is higher and prices are also high, customers should research a bit before buying any hard disk. The trend in the market nowadays is of 2 TB. It would be a good option to read some reviews or articles about the best 2 TB hard disks.

Of course, once you buy it, you also need to take care of the product and save it from heat, dust and water etc.

Visiting the Jew Town in Kochi

The Jew Town is a unique place in Kochi. It is also called the Pardesi Town. I have heard about this place because of a music album produced by one of my friends, Ruth Hertz Weber. However, I had no idea what to expect.

There are two major monuments for visitors who are visiting Kochi–the Dutch Palance and the Jew Synagouge. Both are worth visiting because of their historical heritage, and also for people who are interested in knowing the history of Kerela and Jew people in India.

Ferry to MattancherryHow to reach Jew Town

I was staying in Hotel Kochi Caprice which was far away from the Jew Town. We hired a 3-wheeler auto who suggested that we should take a ferry from the ferry station to Mattencherry, and we will land directly in the Jew Town. The option sounded interesting and we opted for it.

Surprisingly, it was very economical also–the fare for one person was only 7 INR. It provides you a beautiful boating experience too as it takes almost 15-20 minutes to reach the place. You could take an auto-rickshaw too but that would be very costly.

Dutch PalaceThe Dutch Palace

The Dutch Palace houses historical information and artifacts of the kings of Kerela. It is a ticketed monument and photography inside the palace is not allowed. You can spend more than 30 minutes going through various objects in the palace.

The Synagogue

Jew SynagogueThe Jew Synagogue is a beautiful monument–it is in the street behind the Dutch Palace. It is considered as the oldest active Synagogue in the Commonwealth Nations. The ambience of the place is serene and soaked in history. It’s a ticket monument and photograph is not allowed inside.

The market outside the Synagogue is quite costly. However, if you want to buy some memorabilia or souvenir, you can try many things available in the shops right from jewelry, clothes, and statues, etc.

Marine Drive

The ferry station is very close to the Marine Drive. I went to the Marine Drive and opted for a shared boating, which took us in the water for about half and hour–but it was very costly. You can avoid doing boating here and instead take a boat to Mattancherry or Fort Kochi from the ferry station, which is way too cheap.

However, the market opposite the Marine Drive is very economical. The road vendors offer great prices.

Where to eat

We ate a lot of places during out stay in Kochi, but I found the Bimbis Fast Food opposite the Marine Drive to the best option. It had South Indian as well as North Indian food items, and the prices were just great. The taste was also great. I would recommend this place to tourists who are visiting the Marine Drive in Kochi.

Transfer from Airport

I landed at Kochi airport at around 10:30 PM and was worried about taxi services during night; however, the taxi service available at Kochi is fantastic and is quite cheap. Alternatively, you can try Uber cabs too.

I hired Uber to visit Cherai beach which is around 40 Km from Kochi and they took us there without any hassle.

Then I had to take a flight back to Delhi Airport at 6 AM from Kochi. I booked an Uber cab at 3 AM which was quite outstanding given the time.

Overall, transportation is not a problem at all in Kochi.

Well, I am sure you are stung by the fever of playing MineCraft—a wonderful game that captures imagination and creativity while providing unimaginable joy to the players. Wondering how to play it online? Don’t worry—playing MineCraft online is absolutely possible. Among various sites that I could find out through the research, https://play-minecraft.online/ looked quite decent and having nice UI at the same time important information for the beginners of the game.

If you are a beginner

If you are beginner, you will need to start with building a place where you can take refuge. This can be done with the board of wood workmanship. During daytime, you can go on and collect various items and materials that are helpful in building and construction.

To gather wood, metal, sand and stone, you will need to break the blocks—this can be done by pressing the left button of your house repeatedly, which will give you a good amount of the material for your construction purposes.

At the same time, you can focus on improving your health by choosing various food items available in the game. As you fill the hunger bar, you gain your strength in the game. However, if you choose to play the ‘peaceful mode’ of the game, your hunger bar will be automatically replenished after some time.

The joy of the playing MineCraft

Without doubt, it is a wonderful game and lots of players all over the world are trying their brains in constructing and building their refuge points. You can join them by creating your own refuge and start collecting various items. You don’t need a separate mobile phone or a game console to play this game—you can play it online without any challenge. Let the fun begin and you join in it with full swing.

Why Krishna is Called Damodar

0
0

The splitting of the word ‘Damadar’ gives us the meaning (dam- rope) and udhar (belly). The other spellings of the word Damadar are Dāmodara and also Damodarah. Notably, this is the 367th name of Lord Vishnu in the Vishnu Sahasranam Stotram.

Various meanings

There are three meanings attributed to the name Damodar. The first one ensues from the story in Bhagavata which narrates Krishna’s divine play when he was tied to a wooden mortar with a rope by his foster mother Yashoda (dama – rope; waist – udhara). The other lofty idea attached to the name means “The lord who is known through a heart that is purified (udhara) with the exercising of self-control (dama). The third interpretation says the word referring to “The Lord in whose bosom the entire universe rests”.

If you would like to install Krishna in your house or office, you can think of buying these products:

The story

The story of Damodar mentioned in the Bhagavata Purana goes thus. Lord Krishna was known for his childhood pranks. With the complaints mounting up from the households of Gokul regarding little Krishna’s mischievous pranks, his foster mother Yashoda had no other choice than contemplating on restraining his movement. Therefore she wound a rope (dam) to a wooden mortar and tied it to Krishna’s waist (udar) and went to do her chores. Krishna being impatient of being confined to a place started moving about crawling on the streets with the wooden mortar rolling behind him on the move.

On the way, there stood two huge trees very close to each other. Krishna crawled in between the trees with the mortar getting struck in between. When the little child effortlessly pulled the rope, the mortar got released by felling those huge trees with a thunderous noise. Two Gandhavas (celestial beings) who were the sons of Kubera (the god of wealth) emerged in their lustrous forms from the trees and bowed in front of Lord Krishna with folded hands. This was the day of redemption for them as they were mercifully rescued from their cursed state. Earlier, Sage Narad had cursed them for their arrogance confining them to the state of those two trees. Krishna’s divine touch had cured the curse and brought them out from their confinement.

Thus the divine name of Lord Krishna ‘Damodar’ reminds us of one of the most charming divine plays of the Lord.

Why Krishna is Called Keshav

In the Vishnu Sahasranam Stotram, you find the name Keshav occurring as the 23rd and 648th names. Keshav is one of the most prominent titles attributed to Lord Vishnu and very fondly used by the devotees of the Lord. The word Keshav also occurs in several places in the Vedas, the oldest scriptures of Hinduism. Therefore the history of the name Keshav has a very long tradition. Here we discuss some of the meanings of the term Keshav.

In the Bhagwad Gita

In the Bhagvad Gita, Arjun addresses Krishna as Keshav in several places. When little Krishna was growing up in Gokul, Kamsa had come to know that his impending death was in the hands of Krishna. Therefore he sent several demons to kill Krishna. One such demon was Keshi who attacked Krishna in the form of a horse. Krishna kicked the horse with his little foot and tore it into pieces. The name Keshav applies to Krishna as he had slain the demon Keshi.

In addition to being directly associated with Kirshna, the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, the name Keshav is widely used to refer to Lord Vishnu. Here are some meanings of the word Keshav as given by Adi Shankara in his commentary of Vishnu Sahasranam Stotram.

  • One who has a long, shiny and uncut hair (also this reference is found in Padma Purana)
  • The Lord of creation, sustenance and destruction – all put in one
  • One who destroyed the demon Keshi in Krishnavatar
  • One who is more effulgent than that of the sun god
  • One who assumes the three roles of Brahma (Kah), Vishnu (ah) and Shiva (isa)

Why Krishna is Called Makhan Chor

0

Makhan Chor is a name fondly used by the devotees to address Lord Krishna. This Hindi term means the one who steals butter (Makhan – butter; Chor – thief). Many names associated with Krishna or with any god for that matter in Hinduism are deeply symbolic. Here we discuss why Krishna is called as Makhan Chor.

Going back to the Dwapara Yuga

To listen to the story of sweet little Krishna during the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, we must go back in time to the age of Dwapara to the little hamlet Gokul located on the banks of Yamuna River. Krishna was growing in Gokul as the younger son of Nanda, the village head. Yashoda, the foster mother of Krishna and the wife of Nanda was deeply attached to Krishna and gave a royal life to Krishna. Krishna was so cute and effulgent and looked far different from any regular child. His mesmerizing personality and the miraculous powers revealed that he could be none other than an incarnation of God.

If you would like to install Krishna in your house or office, you can think of buying these products:

The main occupation of the people of Gokul was dairy farm. Every household in the village had several cows. The region was fertile that the cows gave a lot of milk and the households overflowed with milk, curds, butter and ghee. Krishna was fond of butter. Krishna was not the son of Nanda’s family alone. He was the darling of every household in the village and also beyond. In order to bring Krishna to their homes, the people of Gokul and Vrindavan stored a lot of butter in their homes. Krishna mischievously stole butter from their homes but was never to be caught. However, the incident of stealing butter carried a deep spiritual symbolism.

The ladies of the households in Gokul were called as Gopikas. They were deeply in reverential adoration of Krishna and spent all their days in Krishna’s thought. In fact, some mythological and Puranic references say the gods who wanted to enjoy the divine plays of Vishnu descended to the earth during Krishnavatar and became Gopikas. The story of the divine love between Krishna and Gopikas is enamoring and uplifting. Krishna moved about the village playfully performing his several divine plays to delight and enlighten the folk in Gokul and sowed the seeds of divine love in their hearts. Krishna’s divine feet never left any household in the village unvisited. The butter pots were broken and Krishna stole butter from every house.

Gopikas always wanted some excuse to visit Krishna. Therefore in the pretext of complaining that Krishna had stolen butter from their houses, they frequented Nanda’s house time and again. This became a nuisance for Yashoda. Once Yashoda caught hold of Krishna and asked him, “Ye mischievous little thief! Don’t we have enough butter in our home? Why do you steal butter from other homes and bring a bad name to the family?”. Krishna said, “Oh Mother! I do know we have a lot of butter in our home. It is not butter that I steal from their homes, but the soft butter like devotion they have in their hearts for me”.

Symbolic meaning

The concept of Krishna stealing butter is rather highly symbolic. Butter signifies the product of spiritual sadhana. Butter does not come on its own. To obtain butter, we must churn the curds. Similarly, the heart needs to be churned with devotion to bring out the essence of divine love emanating out of it like the butter brimming out of the pot of curds. It is this product of spiritual sadhana that Krishna is very fond of. Therefore as Makhan Chor he steals the butter of pure, selfless and sublime devotion from the heart of his devotees.

Why Krishna is Called Mukund

0
0

Krishna is the incarnation of the Supreme Godhead. Hinduism believes that God descends on this earth time and again to restore Dharma, protect the noble and pious and destroy the wicked and evil ones. The term Mukund is one of the most popular names of Lord Vishnu and hence Krishna is addressed with this name.

Splitting it into its syllables, the Sanskrit term Mukund can be interpreted as (Mu – liberation or Mukti; Ku – material existence; da – one who bestows) the supreme Godhead who can redeem us from the material existence and confer Mukti or liberation.

If you would like to install Krishna in your house or office, you can think of buying these products:

In a reference to Bhagavad Gita, Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba says in His book Geetha Vahini, “For the Geetha is the “milk” of the Upanishads, “drawn” by the Cowherd Krishna with the help of Arjuna, “the calf,” for all the “dull-witted” to drink and draw sustenance from.”

The primary task of any Avatar (divine incarnation) is to teach the mankind the highest wisdom. Avatars descend on this earth so that the humans can ascend to the higher consciousness and the supreme state of existence.

Here, it is very appropriate to make a reference to two verses from the Bhagavad Gita.

Krishna says:

Sarva Dharmaan Parithyajya Maam Ekam Sharanam Vraja

Aham Tvaa Sarva Paapebhyo Moksha Ikshyaami Maa Shucha

Ye Man! Leave all the different ways prescribed by the texts. Take refuge in Me alone. I will wash out all your sins and confer the highest state of Mukti or liberation.

Krishna Says:

Ananyas Chintayantomaa Ye Jana Paryupaasate

Teshaam Nityaabhi Yuktaanaam Yoga Kshemam Vahaam Yaham

If one worships me constantly without any other thought, I shall take care of their material as well as spiritual well-being.

Therefore, Krishna is Mukund since his divine mission on the earth is to liberate people from the cycles of birth and death (due to ignorance and attachment) and confer the highest state of liberation or Mukti.

Why Krishna is called Madhusudan

0
0

Madhusudan is one of the most popular titles of Krishna. It literally means the one who slayed the demon Madhu (Madhu – the name of the demon; Sudan – one who slayed). During Krishnavatar, the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, Krishna vanquished several demons. However, we do not come across a demon called Madhu killed by Krishna during his incarnation in the age of Dwapar. Arjuna nevertheless makes use of the name Madhusudan several times in Bhagavad Gita to address Krishna. This is because all the names attributed to Lord Vishnu are interchangeably used to address Lord Krishna as well since He is considered Poorna Avatar (the complete manifestation of Vishnu). Here we discuss a mythological story narrated in the Puranas that describe how Vishnu slayed a demon called Madhu.

Very long ago before the start of creations, Lord Vishnu was in Yoganidra – engrossed into himself on his serpent couch. From his naval came out Lord Brahma seated on a lotus and started the creations as Vishnu’s representative. From the ear wax of Lord Vishnu, came out two demons called Madhu and Kaitab. They started troubling all the three worlds and even snatched the Vedas of Lord Brahma which helped him with the creative process. Lord Brahma approached Mother Lakshmi and she in turn woke up Vishnu from his deeply engrossed state. Lord Vishnu found the two demons and listened to all the complaints from Brahma. First, the Lord took the form of Hayagriva (Haya – horse; Griva – neck) and rescued the Vedas. There was a stiff fight between the demons and the Lord.

If you would like to install Krishna in your house or office, you can think of buying these products:

At the end, though defeated, the demons would not die as a result of the boon they received from Brahma which said they will face their death only when they wished to die. Hayagriva asked the demons for a boon. In all their arrogance, they granted him whatever he wanted. Vishnu sought their death as the boon and caused the death of Madhu and Kaitab in a witty manner. Therefore as the slayer of Madhu, Lord Vishnu is called as Madhusudan.

Why Krishna is Called Ranchod

0
0

Among the many names of Lord Krishna, the term Ranchod is perhaps an interesting one since it carries a negative connotation may be lovingly attributed to the Lord. The term Ranchod means one who flees away from the battlefield. The name is indicative of a story centered on a clever plot devised by Lord Krishna to kill the otherwise invincible demon Kaalyavana.

The story

In the age of Dwapara, the Mahabharata war on the soils of Kurukshetra was over and Dharmaja, the eldest of the Pandavas was put on the throne of Hastinapur. Now Krishna moved to Madhura to take care of his Yadhava clan. Yadhavas faced a frequent threat from several enemies. Once, the terrific demon Kaalayavana waged an attack against the Yadhava Kingdom along with Jarasandha of Magadha and other allies. In order to save the Yadhavas, Krishna created a fabulous city in the middle of ocean named Dwaraka. Overnight, the Yadhavas were transported to Dwaraka.

If you would like to install Krishna in your house or office, you can think of buying these products:

The forces of Kaalayavana advanced pursuing Krishna. In an effort to enter into a duel with Krishna, Kaalayavana chased him. Krishna pretended as if he was running away from the battlefield followed by Kaalayavana. In a witty plot, Krishna allured Kaalayavana inside a cave where Muchukunda was meditating. This was an emperor and the ancestor of Lord Srirama of the Treta Yuga. Earlier, Muchukunda assisted Indra in his battle against the demons. When Indra won the war with his help and asked him what boon he would want in return, the emperor asked for a long undisturbed sleep for ages to rest. He also asked if anyone disturbed him from his sleep, he would be burnt to ashes. Indra acceded to his wish and granted the same.

The sleeping sage

Now in Dwapara Yuga, Muchukunda had been sleeping in the cave for ages only to be disturbed by the entry of Kaalyavana led by Krishna. As per the boon, now Kaalyavana was burnt to ashes and Muchukunda was blessed with the vision of the Lord. Muchukunda realized several ages had passed after he started sleeping and the generations had now turned much smaller in size than his own. He was directed by Krishna to engage in penance, absolve his sins and ascend to the heavens. He then travelled to Gandhamadana Parvat in the North and entered into penance in Badrikashrama.

In this interesting story, we find Krishna feeing away from the battlefield in order to enact an interesting dram and put an end to the demon Kaalayavana. Therefore Krishna came to be fondly called as Ranchod.

Why Krishna is called Yogeshwar

0
0

Yogeshwar is a highly fitting title given to Lord Krishna. The purport of this term is the master of senses. Krishna, the Supreme Consciousness chose to descend on the earth to redeem the human kind from its slumber and ignorance. Krishna achieved several superhuman feats in his life. As Poornavatar (complete incarnation), he always remained in a blissful state of existence far removed from any bondage to the material world. This is one of the reasons why Krishna is called Yogeshwar.

A Yogi is a super human being who sacrifices the lower inclinations for the sake of achieving the higher and more worthy ends of life. A Yogi must stick to his vrat or vow in a steadfast manner to prove his level of maturity and superior capabilities. Krishna went a step higher in this regard to even sacrifice his own vow for the sake of fulfilling the vow of his devotee. By doing this, he proved he is a superior Yogi or Yogeshwar, the Lord of Yogis. The incident that highlighted this aspect of Krishna is interesting and worth noting here.

The incident

Before the Mahabharat war, both Dharmaja and Dhuryodan went forth gathering the support they could. Kirshna was the center of attraction for both of them. One day, Dharmaja and Dhuryodhan went to Krishna asking for his support. Krishna was lying on his couch. Dharmaja stood at Krishna’s feet while Dhuryodhan stayed near his head. When Krishna pretended to open his eyes after a nap, his eyes first fell on Dharmaja waiting humbly at his feet. It was then he noticed and greeted Dhuryodhan. Krishna said on first come first priority basis Dharmaja and Dhuryuodan could ask what they wanted from him. Krishna also added that he chose to remain on one side and would give away his army to the other side. Dharmaja sought Krishna while Dhuryodana sought Krishna’s army. Krishna further said he would never carry a weapon in his hand in the battlefield when he sided with Dharmaja.

When it was Bhishma’s turn to lead the Kaurava army, Dhuryodhan expected him to vanquish Pandavas and their army in one day. He chided and insulted Bhishma for not fighting properly. In his anger, Bhishma vowed that with his fierce fight, he will make even Krishna lift a weapon in his hands. In the battle field, Bhishma roared and swung forward like a lion. Krishna found Bhishma uncontrollable. He knew the heart of his devotee. He never wanted Bhishma to fail his vow. Therefore, Krishna chose to carry a chariot wheel on his hands and whirled it in the battlefield. Thus, in order to pass his devotee, Krishna was ready to fail himself. Here we find Krishna surging several steps higher to prove he is Yogeshwar, the one who sacrifices the lower concerns for a higher concern – yes, for Supreme God, supporting his devotee is a major concern more important than his personal vow.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna championed divine wisdom in three streams namely Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Gnana Yoga. The supreme enlightenment flowed from the fountain head of Yogeshwar in the form of these three Yogas to educate men for eternity.

Shyam is an enchanting name of Krishna used separately as well as in combination with other words like Radheshyam, Ghanshyam, Shyamsundar, Shyamgopal and many others. Krishna is called Shyam due to his dark complexion (the word Shyam means dark). The very term Krishna is suggestive of Black complexion. Another interpretation of the term Krishna says, “Krushyati Iti Krushnah” meaning Krishna is that which attracts. Now the question is why Krishna chose to be black.

If you would like to install Krishna in your house or office, you can think of buying these products:

The science behind colors and lights says white is the perfect reflector. White is the combination of all seven colors. Black is the perfect absorber and it is the absence of any other color. When there is light, colors come to existence. When there is no light, there is no color. The vastness of the ether space is black all over. It is the source from where everything emerges and then merges back.

Purusha Suktam says,

Sahasra-Shiirssaa Purussah Sahasra-Akssah Sahasra-Paat |

Sa Bhuumim Vishvato Vrtva-Atya[i]-Tisstthad-Dasha-Angulam ||1||

Meaning:

The Purusha (Universal Being) has Thousand Heads, Thousand Eyes and Thousand Feet (Here thousand represents innumerable and infinite number that is uncountable)

He envelops the World and the Universe from all sides and extends for about ten inches even beyond the created universe.

Black suggests expansiveness. Even the celestial bodies emitting light are contained within this black space. Therefore the Supreme Principle that expands far beyond the created universe must be in black color – which is actually a colorless and without any attributes.

Krishna cannot be limited; He cannot be comprehended; He is beyond qualities; He is vast and all pervasive; He is the absolute principle that is not accessible to ordinary minds and therefore Krishna is depicted in black.

Krishna is the symbol of Supreme Godhead and hence depicted in black color. Shyam is synonymous with the term Krishna and therefore widely used to address Krishna. Krishna as Shyam is the repository of all beauties.
